About this tool

This word counter analyses your text as you type or paste it. It shows the number of words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines, plus an estimate of how long the text takes to read silently and to say out loud.

It is handy for essays with a minimum length, social media posts with a character limit, meta descriptions, product listings, speeches and blog articles. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or an accented letter counts once. Your text is processed locally and is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. The counts update instantly with every keystroke.
  2. Check the word and character totals against your limit. Use “characters without spaces” when a limit ignores whitespace.
  3. Read the reading and speaking times to estimate how long your text will take to read or present.
  4. Press “Clear” to start again with a fresh text.

Frequently asked questions

How does the counter decide what a word is?

Any group of characters separated by whitespace that contains at least one letter or number counts as a word. Stand-alone punctuation such as a dash is ignored.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, a typical silent reading speed for adults. Speaking time assumes roughly 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a speech.

Are my texts saved or sent anywhere?

No. The counting runs entirely in your browser, so your text never reaches a server and disappears when you close or refresh the page.

Does it work for other languages?

Yes. It counts letters and numbers from any alphabet. Languages that do not separate words with spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, are better measured by the character count.
