About this tool
A strong password is long, random and unique. This password generator builds one for you in a single click using your browser’s cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) instead of a predictable pseudo-random function. It also avoids modulo bias, so every character in the set you choose is equally likely to appear.
You decide the length and which characters to include: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, digits and symbols. Each selected group is guaranteed to appear at least once, and the strength meter estimates the entropy of the result in bits so you can see how hard it would be to guess. Nothing is sent over the network and nothing is saved: the password only exists on your screen until you close the page.
How to use it
- Set the length with the slider or the number field. For most accounts, 16 characters or more is a good choice.
- Tick the character types you want: lowercase, uppercase, digits and symbols. Some websites do not accept symbols, so you can turn them off.
- Press “Generate” for a new password at any time. The password also refreshes when you change an option.
- Press “Copy” and paste the password into your password manager or the sign-up form.
Frequently asked questions
How long should my password be?
Aim for at least 16 characters for important accounts. Length matters more than complexity: every extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords.
Is it safe to generate a password online?
Here it is, because the password is created entirely inside your browser with the Web Crypto API. It is never uploaded or stored, and the page works the same offline once loaded.
What is password entropy?
Entropy measures unpredictability in bits. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses an attacker needs. Passwords above roughly 80 bits are considered very hard to crack by brute force.
Why would I exclude look-alike characters?
Characters such as I, l, 1, O and 0 are easy to confuse when you have to read or type a password by hand. Excluding them makes it easier to copy by eye, with only a small loss of strength.
