About this tool

This unit converter handles the seven conversions people need most: length, weight, volume, area, speed, temperature and digital data size. Pick a category, enter a value and choose the units to convert from and to. The result updates as you type, and a table beneath it shows the same value in every other unit of the category.

Conversions use exact definitions: an inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres and a pound exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. Volumes use US customary units, and data sizes distinguish decimal units (KB, MB, GB, where 1 KB is 1,000 bytes) from binary ones (KiB, MiB, GiB, where 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes). Temperatures below absolute zero are rejected. All calculations happen in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose a category such as length, weight or temperature.
  2. Enter the value you want to convert in the value field.
  3. Select the unit to convert from and the unit to convert to. Use the swap button to reverse them.
  4. Read the result, or look at the table to see the value in every unit of the category. Press “Copy” to copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert miles to kilometres?

Pick “Length”, enter the number of miles, then choose miles as the source unit and kilometres as the target. One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres.

Are the gallons and cups US or UK?

The volume units are US customary: one US gallon is 3.785 litres, and a US cup is about 237 millilitres. UK imperial gallons are larger, so check which one your recipe or document uses.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes, while a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes. Storage makers use decimal units, while many operating systems report binary ones, which is why a drive seems smaller than advertised.

How accurate are the results?

Results are calculated in double precision and rounded to remove floating-point noise, so they are accurate to at least ten significant digits.
